Carbohydrates in your body naturally bond to water. When you eat a carbohydrate, three grams of water are also stored in your body. Carbohydrate-rich meals cause your body to retain water and make you seem and feel puffy.

Many typical forms of carbohydrate, such as bread, pasta, and rice, create gas in the intestines. According to the National Institutes of Health, common gas-producing foods include carbonated beverages and high-fiber diets.

When you consume sugary carbohydrates, your brain releases dopamine, a feel-good hormone, into the bloodstream. In order for your body to crave sugar, you need to ingest a lot of it. In fact, some researchers have gone so far as to classify this pattern of desires as a disease.

Overindulging in carbohydrates raises your risk of overeating in terms of total calories. A representative for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states, “You may feel energetic short term, but you may get hungry more rapidly.” Fiber-rich carbohydrates, healthy fats, and protein are more filling than refined carbohydrates. As a result, you’re more prone to overeat shortly after a meal. In the long run, this could lead to a habit of overeating and obesity.
