According to the group, Kanu’s prolonged detention has significantly contributed to the region’s instability, including the persistent Monday sit-at-home protests. These disruptions have had a devastating impact on the region’s economy and education sector, resulting in substantial financial losses and academic setbacks.
The NUF criticized previous administrations for disregarding appeals from prominent Igbo leaders for Kanu’s release. The group emphasized that the South-East region, once known for its peace and stability, has faced escalating challenges since Kanu’s arrest.
To resolve the crisis, the NUF proposed a delegation comprising South-East governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and influential Igbo women leaders to meet with President Tinubu and negotiate Kanu’s release.
Additionally, the group urged South-East governors to prioritize regional development, focusing on security, agriculture, and infrastructure. They highlighted the region’s potential to generate substantial revenue through agricultural initiatives.
The NUF’s call for Kanu’s release comes amidst ongoing tensions in the South-East region. The group’s proposal for a delegation to meet with President Tinubu aims to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
