The payment was reportedly facilitated through the efforts of Niger Republic military Head of State, General Abdourahamane Tiani and Russian President, Vladimir Putin.
Despite this breakthrough, tensions remain high as JNIM has issued a new demand, insisting on a non-negotiable ransom of 2 billion CFA for the release of two Russian civil mercenaries still in their custody.
According to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who reported on the situation on Sunday, the militant group’s demands leave little room for negotiation.
Meanwhile, Niger has requested a three-month ceasefire from the insurgents, though the status of this request remains unclear as negotiations continue.
