The accident happened at about 2:30 p.m. near the university’s permanent site in Felele, Lokoja.
According to vanguard, the truck transporting wood and hundreds of kegs of palm oil toward Abuja, experienced brake failure and crashed into the fully loaded university shuttle bus.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) that arrived at the scene to rescue survivors recovered dead bodies from the wreckage.
The Kogi State Sector Commandant of the FRSC, Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, stated that while he could not immediately confirm the exact number of fatalities, all injured victims had been rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja and Kogi State Specialist Hospital for urgent medical attention, while the deceased were deposited in the mortuary for identification.
He urged drivers to maintain their vehicles properly and exercise caution to prevent similar tragedies.
He noted that more details are expected as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
