The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) has called on the Federal Government to put an end to the “alarming” and “disheartening” surge in killings, kidnapping, and banditry that have plagued the country in the past week. In a statement released on Tuesday, NIREC, under the leadership of the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Daniel Okoh, and the Sultan of Sokoto, who also serves as the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Sa’ad Abubakar, expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in Nigeria......See Full Story>>.....See Full Story>>

“The rates at which banditry, abductions and killings are increasing in the country is beyond alarming and there is the need to bring these heinous acts to an end,” the statement, signed by NIREC Secretary Cornelius Omonokhua, read.

NIREC highlighted a series of recent violent incidents, including the killing of thirteen farmers in Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, the abduction of one hundred and fifty persons in Gobir District of Sokoto State, and the gruesome murder of the District Head of Gatawa in Sokoto State. They also mentioned a foiled bandit attack in Malumfashi LGA of Katsina State, among other tragic events.

“This spate of attacks within the window period of one week is very disheartening and of great concern,” the council noted.

In light of these events, NIREC urged the government and security agencies to “intensify their efforts to eradicate these menaces in our society so that citizens can go about their normal businesses without fear or apprehension.”

The council also extended its sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in these attacks and offered prayers for the safe return of those still held captive.
