The incident, which occurred around 10:30 AM on Seidlstrasse in central Munich, is being described as a “suspected attack” by authorities.

The driver, identified as a 24-year-old Afghanistan-born man currently in Germany as an asylum seeker, was arrested on-site and posed no further danger, the police confirmed.

Bavaria’s Premier, Markus Söder, reacting to the incident, said it appeared there were some dead persons among the victims.

Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter also said that “many people have been injured, including children.”

A police spokesperson said that the car approached a demonstration organised by Verdi, one of Germany’s largest trade unions, from behind, before overtaking a police vehicle and ploughing into the crowd.

Eyewitnesses told Sky News that the driver approached a police vehicle before suddenly accelerating into the assembled demonstrators, leaving a devastating impact.

People were sent sprawling onto the pavement, screams of terror were heard around the area, while a mother and her child were among the victims, Sky News reported, citing eyewitnesses.

According to the Munich Police, emergency services rushed to the scene, while rescue helicopters were soon deployed to aid the injured.

“Caring for the injured is currently the top priority,” Munich police stated on social media, adding that two individuals are in a critical condition.

The suspect, an Afghan national with a history of drug-related and theft offenses, who drove a Mini Cooper is currently being detained, as the police look to unravel his exact motives.

However, the police do not believe the crash is linked to a high-profile Munich Security Conference, which is set to begin on Friday just 1.5 kilometers from the scene of the tragedy.

U.S. Vice President, JD Vance and Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy are among expected dignitaries to the conference.
