The ESSC Commandant, Friday Ibadin, announced the development in a statement on Saturday, where he revealed that the arrest happened on Friday during a bush-combing operation near Equedion Camp, close to an army checkpoint.
According to Ibadin, the operation was prompted when officers on patrol spotted two armed individuals.
“Today, 14th February 2025, while on patrol along Benin-Auchi Road by Eguedion Camp, close to soldiers checkpoint, two persons were sighted holding guns. On sighting my men, they took to their heels. They were chased to a camp where 18 persons were arrested.
“17 of the 18 arrested suspects are non-indigenes, while one is an indigene from the Agbede community. 38 fully loaded locally made guns and charms were also recovered in the process,” he said.
Ibadin disclosed that 17 of the suspects were non-indigenes, while one was a local from the Agbede community.
He reassured Edo residents of the government’s commitment to security, particularly during the farming season, and stressed the corps’ ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminals.
“Our men will continue to comb the bushes and sensitize locals to ensure our forests are rid of these criminals and that Edo State is safe and secure for all,” he added.
The arrested suspects have been handed over to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Agbede Police Station.
Ibadin also called for closer collaboration between the corps and other security agencies to strengthen efforts in eliminating criminal elements from the state.
