During the opening of a two-day Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Training in Abuja on Tuesday, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, Mandate Secretary of the FCTA Education Secretariat, stated the need for an education system that goes beyond theory.

He noted that entrepreneurship education would empower students to become problem-solvers, innovators, and job creators rather than mere job seekers.

The training was designed for Vice Principals (VPs Academic) in FCT public secondary schools to provide them with leadership strategies, tools, and frameworks to embed entrepreneurship into their school culture.

Dr. Hayyo highlighted that the world’s evolving landscape demands more than academic excellence, it requires critical thinking, adaptability, and the ability to create sustainable solutions.

He urged the vice principals to transition from theoretical instruction to hands-on, skills-driven learning, to foster a culture where students can develop, test, and refine their business ideas with expert mentorship.

“In today’s fast-evolving world, the true measure of education is no longer limited to academic excellence but extends to the ability of students to think critically, identify opportunities, and create sustainable solutions.

“It is our responsibility as educators and administrators to ensure that our schools do not just prepare students for jobs but empower them to shape the future through entrepreneurship and innovation.

“At the end of this training, I expect the vice principals to not just be informed but empowered to transform your schools into centres of innovation and entrepreneurship,” he said.

He also noted that the training will strengthen partnerships with businesses, technology hubs, and financial institutions to expose students to real-world entrepreneurship opportunities.

Vice principals were encouraged to establish innovation hubs in schools and integrate financial literacy, product development, and business simulations into their curriculum.

Dr. Mohammed Ladan, Director of the Secondary Education Board, underscored FCTA’s long-standing commitment to entrepreneurial skills development.

“Recognising the rapidly evolving demands of the 21st century, we have integrated entrepreneurship education into our curriculum, equipping students with practical skills, critical thinking abilities, and a problem-solving mind-set.

“The training programmes conducted for the FCT-BRUNEL Innovation Team have significantly enriched our knowledge base in innovative teaching methodologies, curriculum development, and technology-driven entrepreneurship solutions.

“These initiatives align with our broader goal of transforming FCT secondary schools into hubs of creativity and economic empowerment,” he added.

Ladan further disclosed one of the key achievements is the establishment of an Entrepreneurship Hub in an FCT secondary school—the first of its kind in Nigeria.

He said some schools have also launched innovation and entrepreneurship clubs, where students engage in business simulations and technology-driven solutions.

The initiative, he said, is supported by Brunel University, London, and the FCT-BRUNEL Innovation Team, and it aligns with global best practices in education, that ensures students are equipped for the demands of the 21st century.

Kolawale Olobashola, Director of Science, Technology, and Innovation, revealed that the entrepreneurship curriculum would emphasize science and technology, to ensure students are at the forefront of innovation.
