The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Friday during an interview on Channels Television, where he noted that the unit will operate under the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

According to the minister, the primary goal of the Power Rangers is to prevent vandalism of power infrastructure, which has been a major cause of power outages across the country.

“We have decided now, in collaboration with the Minister of Power, to establish what we call the Power Rangers—specific officers within the NSCDC dedicated to protecting electricity infrastructure,” Tunji-Ojo explained.

He criticised the previous generalised approach to securing national assets, and argued that different sectors require specialised security arms for effective protection.

“You can’t have one solution for all problems. The power sector, water sector, education sector, and health sector all have unique security needs. That’s why we are restructuring the NSCDC to create specialized units under the same umbrella,” he added.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over frequent vandalism of power facilities, which has crippled electricity supply in many parts of the country.

The minister stated that sector-specific security approach will help curb sabotage and improve power stability.
