Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Director of Media and Corporate Affairs at the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), stated in an interview with Vanguard on Tuesday evening that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is overseeing the matter.

Balogun further noted that the government had established an inter-agency committee, which includes NiDCOM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), to manage the situation in the event of mass deportations from the US.

However, the NiDCOM spokesperson clarified that the commission was not currently aware of any Nigerians in the US being processed for deportation.

It was recently reported that around 3,690 Nigerians in the United States are facing deportation as part of a crackdown on illegal immigration under former President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to a document from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which was shared with our correspondent, the agency provided data on the nationalities of individuals facing removal. As of November 24, 2024, there were 1,445,549 non-citizens on ICE’s non-detained docket with final removal orders.

In the document titled “Noncitizens on the ICE Non-Detained Docket with Final Orders of Removal by Country of Citizenship,”Mexico and El Salvador topped the list, with 252,044 and 203,822 deportation cases, respectively. ICE is responsible for enforcing immigration laws and addressing cross-border crime that threatens US national security.

Meanwhile, last Thursday, hundreds of migrants were arrested, with some flown out of the country on military planes as part of the mass deportation operation that Trump had promised.

Reports suggest that Nigerian and other African immigrants may be the next focus for deportation efforts by the US government.
