The Cawthorne Channel field is an operating oil and gas field in Rivers State.
It is owned 55 per cent by the NNPC and 45 per cent by Eroton Exploration & Production Company.
According to the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the NNPC, Olufemi Soneye, a fire accident was recorded at the Cawthorne Channel 1 Barges.
The time of the incident was 14:10 hours on Wednesday.
However, the NNPC CCCO said that the fire incident was immediately stopped and did not affect flow station operations.
Contrary to reports, the NNPC clarified that there were no casualties.
NNPCL said, “At approximately 14:10 hours on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, a fire broke out on the dry crude storage barge BESTAF5 at Cawthorne Channel 1, Rivers State, spreading to other barges.
“Thanks to the swift response of our emergency teams and industry partners, the fire was successfully contained. The incident did not impact flow station operations.
“Most importantly, there were no casualties, and all personnel are safe.”
The state-owned firm said it prioritises safety and remains fully committed to environmental protection.
It assured stakeholders of operational integrity.
