Mrs. Otti made this charge during the Drug Control Committee Meeting held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Umuahia on Thursday, where she addressed key stakeholders.

In her welcome address, Mrs. Otti emphasized the devastating impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities, stressing that the issue requires a multifaceted approach involving law enforcement, healthcare, education, and community engagement.

“Drug abuse is a menace that has infiltrated every aspect of our society, destroying lives and families. As a responsible society, we must tackle this issue by identifying its root causes such as stress, peer pressure, and a lack of awareness and equipping our youths with the right knowledge to make informed decisions,” she stated.

The First Lady proposed the formation of a dedicated task force to coordinate efforts across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and law enforcement. She also called for a comprehensive public awareness campaign to educate citizens on the dangers of drug abuse through social media, print, and electronic media.

Acknowledging the struggles of those battling addiction, Mrs. Otti assured that the government would strengthen rehabilitation services and reduce the stigma associated with addiction. She praised her husband, Governor Alex Otti, for his unwavering support in addressing the crisis, noting that his administration had recently approved funds for the renovation of the rehabilitation center in Umuahia.

“Beyond rehabilitation, prevention remains our greatest weapon in this fight. Education plays a critical role in preventing drug abuse, and His Excellency understands that when young people are informed and engaged, they are less likely to fall victim to substance abuse,” she said, commending the governor for making basic education free in the state.

The First Lady further announced plans to launch a grassroots anti-drug abuse campaign, which will engage schools, religious institutions, and communities. She emphasized the need for parents, teachers, and religious leaders to actively participate in guiding young people toward making the right choices.

“Together, we must protect the future of our children. Let us rise to the challenge, stand as one, and create a drug-free Abia State,” she declared.

The meeting brought together government officials, healthcare professionals, law enforcement agencies, civil society organizations, and community leaders, all of whom pledged their support for the initiatives outlined by the First Lady.
