He added that the governors must address the issue of out-of-school children to make genuine progress.

The governor said, “The protest in the north is a wake-up call for us as leaders. Our region is rich in agriculture. Each of us should return to the field. I have the background for it; I managed the Savannah Sugar Company and chaired all the sugar-producing companies in Nigeria. I am familiar with agriculture and have my personal farms. In Nasarawa, we have 5,000 hectares and are preparing for our first harvest.

“The next meeting we should have as governors of Northern Nigeria can no longer be one where we say religion forbids us from taking action. God has bestowed this leadership upon us. If we don’t step up and say what needs to be done, we will fail.

“During the last protest in Lafia, the majority of those who took to the streets were almajiris. Some were as young as five or seven years old, and many of them did not even comprehend the reason for the protest. They didn’t know what they were protesting against.

“When we sought to address the issue of almajiris, some religious leaders criticized our efforts. But given what is happening now, no one will dare to criticize it. Otherwise, it will become a time bomb that could consume all of us.”
