Kanu is confident that Arsenal, which he played for, can end their 21 years Premier League title drought this season after finishing second behind Manchester City in the last two seasons.
The Gunners have been impressive in the 2024-25 season but they have found Liverpool as a tough customer on top of the Premier League table all season.
The Reds are currently seven points clear of Arsenal with 13 games to go, but Kanu is optimistic that his former club can wrestle the title from Liverpool due to their recent form.
“I’m not surprised by Arsenal’s current form and performance. I’ve been to the Emirates Stadium and met with the coach, Mikel Arteta, back when Edu was there. We spoke, and I saw their plans. It was a solid long-term strategy.
“So, what is happening now – their wonderful performances and the way they are winning games – is not new to me. I always knew they would get things right.
“But if you look back at the last two seasons, Arsenal have finished second in the Premier League. And each time, it has been just small details that have stopped them from winning the title.
“This year, you can see the progress. Every season, they keep improving. The time will come when they won’t be second anymore because if you keep finishing second, your aim will be to come first.
Kanu had a successful time at the Emirates Stadium with the Gunners from 1999 to 2004, winning two Premier League titles.
He was also part of the history-making Invincible team, who won the league unbeaten in the 2003-04 season.
The former Super Eagles acknowledged the team’s improvement in the past three years, backing them to win the league despite injuries to key players.
He said: “When people talk about Arsenal now, they see them among the big clubs again. Look at Manchester United and where they are on the table. Arsenal, however, are up there.
“This year, they are still fighting to be number one. And for me, who says ‘we’ (Arsenal) can’t win the league? I was an Arsenal player, and I support Arsenal as well. They have the potential, the quality, and they are doing well despite injuries to key players.
“If they keep playing the way they are now, I believe they can win the league.”
Kanu, who is currently the Chairman of Nigeria Premier Football League side, Enyimba was also full of praise for teenage star Ethan Nwaneri.
He said: “He’s a wonderful player, when you talk about the best players in the world, you have to mention his name. And I’m happy and proud that he is of Nigerian origin. That’s a good thing. Arsenal must make full use of him.
“I know Saka is not there, but Nwaneri has stepped up and filled the gap. Not only is he filling the gap, but he is also scoring goals and providing assists. When you consider his age, you realise the sky’s the limit for him and Arsenal.
“You need players like him in your squad so that tomorrow, you don’t have to spend millions upon millions of pounds on a player you already have in your academy.
“I’m quite impressed with what he has done so far, and I believe he will do even more.”
Arsenal extended their unbeaten run to 15 games in the Premier League with the 2-0 win over Leicester City (W10 D5), their longest run without defeat since going 16 games between December 2010 and April 2011 under Arsene Wenger.
Kanu scored 44 goals and recorded 35 assists in 197 appearances for Arsenal during his five-year stay at the Emirates Stadium.
