This warning was issued by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, in a statement on Monday.

Alebiosu emphasized the importance of adhering to road safety and infrastructure preservation laws, particularly concerning the transportation of wet sand.

“Driving tipper trucks filled with wet sand on the road is highly illegal,” he stated in the statement shared by the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development via its social media platforms.

The commissioner stressed that compliance with these regulations is crucial to protecting road infrastructure and ensuring safer transportation across Lagos.

He urged tipper operators to allow dredged sand to dry completely before transporting it.

The ministry explained that wet sand increases the weight of the truck, doubling its negative impact on the road.

“Wet sand significantly increases the weight of the truck, doubling its negative impact on the road. The excessive weight increases wear and tear, causing cracks, potholes, and ruts, which degrade roads not designed to handle such stress.

“To avoid being apprehended, tipper operators must ensure that newly dredged sand is allowed to dry properly before being hauled. The load must also not exceed legal weight limits,” the statement added.
