The clash happened during a routine anti-banditry operation when the bandits confronted the troops. Despite the strong resistance from the bandits, the soldiers managed to dislodge them.

Shapi’i Sambo, a youth leader in Wase, indicated that while the exact number of casualties was unclear, a significant number of bandits were killed when the soldiers attacked their camp. He also noted that some soldiers lost their lives in the conflict.

Sambo explained that the security forces had acted in response to reports of daily criminal activities by the bandits, who had been causing severe distress in the area. “Many of the bandits were killed, and others fled,” he said.

A local vigilante, who requested anonymity, confirmed the incident, stating that three soldiers were killed and more than 15 bandits died in the clash. The community was reportedly relieved by the intervention of security personnel, as the bandits had been a significant threat, engaging in cattle rustling and frequent robberies.

Efforts to reach Maj. Samson Zhakom, the spokesperson for Operation Safe Haven, were unsuccessful as his phone went unanswered. Similarly, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Alabo Alfred, could not be reached for comment.

Recent reports indicate that Wase LGA has faced multiple attacks by suspected bandits, who have been operating in the Bashir district for years. Just two days prior, soldiers discovered the body of a police officer abducted the previous week near Kampani community. Additionally, on May 21, bandits attacked Zurak community, killing over 40 villagers and injuring many, including vigilantes assisting security forces.
