The government through the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance in conjunction with Eastern Waste Management Company (EWAMAC) rolled out guidelines on mode of operation for scavengers and metal dealers in the state on Monday.

In the public notice, scavengers are required to pay their monthly waste management levy through the leadership of their association, National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers of Nigeria (NASWDEN) and also operate from 7am in the morning and close by 6pm in the evening.

The notice reads: “The Eastern Waste Management Company ( EWAMAC) in collaboration with the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance hereby, notifies all Scrap/metal waste dealers in the state to adhere to these directives.

“All members of the association are required to pay for their monthly waste disposal fees,through the leadership of the Association(NASWDEN).

“Every Loading of Trucks must be monitored by the taskforce from Ewamac,SA Monitoring and compliance office and Association(NASWDEN) taskforce,clearance certificate will be issued after Loading.

“All Scavengers must register with a particular dump or dealer and uniform or Apron be provided for them with a number tag.

“Scavengers must start and close their daily activities from 7am and end by 6pm.

“The Ewamac’s task force together with the task force team of the SA on Monitoring and Compliance will be on the move to ensure total adherence to this directive as well as apprehend defaulters.”

This development is seen as the government’s measure to checkmate criminals who carry out crimes from dump sites under the guise of scavengers.
