On Sunday, August 25, the former editor with BBC was detained by the operatives of the secret intelligence service at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, shortly after arriving from the UK.
Soyinka’s arrest led to outrage including interventions from the International Press Institute, which forced the DSS to release him after much pressure.
The service however seized his passport.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Soyinka was accompanied by human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, to the DSS office in Ikoyi, Lagos to retrieve the passport.
Speaking on the development, Effiong said the intelligence secret police attributed the arrest of the journalist to “mistaken identity”.
Commenting on the development, the founder of Foundation for Investigative Journalism, ’Fisayo Soyobo, questioned the DSS professionalism.
He said “The DSS blaming its Juwon Soyinka’s passport seizure and detention on ‘mistaken identity’ has to be the joke of the year.
“The country’s foremost intelligence agency lacks the compentence to properly identify its targets?
“The logical redress would be a public apology to Juwon, and to the Nigerian journalism fraternity.”
