In videos on Tuesday, the aggrieved university workers were seen in large numbers protesting inside the campus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.
They carried placards with different inscriptions to demand the immediate release of their withheld salaries.
SaharaReporters had earlier reported how the unions directed its members to commence a nationwide protest on Tuesday.
The decision came after the federal government’s unsuccessful attempt to address the unions’ grievances regarding four months of withheld salaries.
The unions had expressed frustration over what they perceive as the government’s disregard for their financial and welfare concerns.
In a statement jointly signed by SSANU National President Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim and his NASU counterpart Peters Adeyemi in Abuja, the union leadership accused the federal government of failing to demonstrate a convincing commitment to paying withheld salaries and resolving other outstanding grievances of the two unions.
The unions had expressed disappointment in the government’s lack of commitment and have planned a series of industrial actions.
These included a general meeting of their branches to raise awareness among members about the government’s insensitivity, a one-day nationwide protest on Tuesday, and a national protest in Abuja on July 18, 2024.
