This was the submission of the competition’s main coordinator, Abdulganiyu Obasa, who told sports247.ng that the organisers are motivated by the zeal of discovering hidden sports talents.
He added that the competition has been expanded beyond just football and into a mini-sports festival, under the banner of Isfak International, in order to be better than the previous edition.
Obasa expatiated, “The motivation basically was to go further beyond what we did in the past, when it was just Obasa Cup and only for football in 2023.
“Although 16 teams from all across Agege took part, we decided to take it to another level this year.
“We expanded it to cover the whole of Lagos Senatorial District, which contains Agege, Oshodi, Mushin, Ikeja, Badagry, Isolo and so on.
“We brought them together to compete in football, table tennis, chess, scrabble and boxing.
“It’s a way of celebrating young people, bringing them together to participate in sports and help them express their talent.”
Obasa then gave a detailed run down of the competition’s benefits that will emerge for the participants, organisers and Lagos State.
“We will definitely see one or two of them that are talented and can take sports as a way of life for themselves.
“We want to provide them with a way of earning a living and expressing themselves so that their talent does not die inside of them.
“We want them to be able to express their talents and get the best out of them. That’s the motivation we have.
“The target is to get young people together and help them put all their energy towards sports rather than get involved in various vices going round in our communities,” Obasa espoused.
He concluded by reeling out the values of sports that Obasa Games aims to propagate, especially in terms of providing a source of future livelihood for youths of today.
“Young people need to participate in sports so that their energy is channelled in the right direction.
“Not everyone will go to school, not everyone will learn handiwork or pick a trade, but some people can actually be sports stars.
“From this competition, we can see those who will end up representing Lagos State, Nigeria and Africa as a whole in various prestigious competitions coming up,” Obasa submitted.
