Labaran, speaking to Vanguard, denounced the move as driven by “selfish interests,” arguing that the creation of the Emirates by the previous administration was intended to promote unity and development.

The Kano State House of Assembly had repealed the Kano Emirates Council Law 2019, which established Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano Emirates from the former Kano Emirate.

During a special plenary presided over by Speaker Jibril Falgore, the lawmakers repealed the Emirates Law. Falgore invoked Order seven Rule 3 (A) of the House, directing the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Bashir Diso, to conduct the third reading of the bill to repeal the Law.

Deputy Speaker Muhammad Butu-Butu argued that repealing the law would restore Kano’s lost glory. He asserted that the division of the Kano Emirate into five Emirates had diminished its capacity and dignity.

Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini emphasized that the Emirate Council was a custodian of Kano’s culture, which was disrupted by the creation of additional Emirates. He proposed that all five Emirate Councils be abolished upon amending the law, with the Commissioner for Local Government overseeing the dissolved Emirate’s activities.

Hussaini emphasized the timeliness of repealing the law and advocated for the decision to be communicated to Governor Abba Yusuf for assent.
