A statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of Education, Mr Kehinde Jimoh, read: “This is to inform the general public, particularly parents, guardians and heads of both public and private schools in the state that due to the planned nationwide protests, all schools are directed to proceed on the third term vacation From Wednesday 31st July, 2023.
“Parents and Guardians are advised to ensure the safety of their wards during the vacation.”
On Monday, the Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Youth Initiatives, Monitoring and Delivery, Mrs Titilope Gbadamosi, pleaded with youths in Oyo State to shun the planned protests against economic hardship.
Gbadamosi made the plea on Monday in Ibadan while addressing various youth organisations gathered at a stakeholders meeting on the planned nationwide protest.
The meeting was organised by the Oyo State Agency for Youth Development (OSAYD) to dialogue with youth organisations in the state on how to make the protest peaceful.
Gbadamosi said that President Tinubu was aware of what Nigerians were going through and has been working relentlessly to address the challenges facing the country.
She said the president had shown responsiveness to the plights of Nigerians through various policies and initiatives put in place to improve living standards.
The official added that the current administration was committed to youth development and has been prioritising issues pertaining to youths since its inception.
Gbadamosi alled on Nigerian youths to key into various federal government schemes and initiatives that would improve their living standard.
Also, the Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Miss Wasilat Adegoke, urged youths in the state who intend to join the protest to make it peaceful.
Adegoke said “we are not saying you should not exercise your rights as citizens of Nigeria but our appeal to you is that you should not involve in violent protest, ensure that you allow the protest to be peaceful.”
The Chairman of OSYD, Mr Adebowale Falana, said his agency organised the meeting to fashion out how to make the planned protest peaceful.
Falana said that youths would constitute the majority of the protesters and that was the reason for inviting the various youth organisations in the state to the meeting to appeal to them to refrain from violence.
