These roads—the 12.6 km Ohanze-Ntighauzo-Obete-Umuoha-Oberete-Akirika Obu Road and the 5.5 km Owerrinta-Umuikaa Road—are expected to improve connectivity, ease transportation, and stimulate economic activities in the region.
The first ceremony took place at Orie Agalaba Junction in the Obingwa Local Government Area, where the Governor launched the construction of the Ohanze-Akirika Obu Road.
The road, which links Obingwa and Ukwa East LGAs, has long been in a deplorable condition, hampering economic activities and the movement of goods, especially farm produce.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Works, Otumchere Oti, described the project as a strategic investment in the state’s economy.
He noted that the road construction is part of Governor Otti’s broader agenda to enhance Abia’s road infrastructure and drive socio-economic growth.
“As we look at the broken, worn-out road before us, we see not only the need for change but an opportunity for transformation. With this project, His Excellency will not only construct a road but also revitalise the communities along this corridor,” the Commissioner stated.
He further explained that the 12.6km road will have a 7-meter-wide carriageway with asphaltic concrete pavement, drainage structures, erosion control measures, and solar streetlights in built-up areas.
The project, which has a contract duration of 12 months, is expected to ease transportation and reduce travel time for road users.
The contractor, Mr. Jack Mallauos of Paceo Carrtera, assured the government and people of Abia that the road would be built to the highest standard.
“For many years, the construction of this road has failed. It has been difficult for workers and businesses. People have struggled with long travel times, damaged vehicles, and economic disruptions. But today, we are here to change things for the better,” he said.
He reaffirmed his company’s commitment to delivering a durable and high-quality road.
“Our company, Paceo Carrtera, is proud to take on this project. We promise to build a strong, high-quality road with proper drainage,” he assured.
The governor Speaking at the event, emphasised the resilience and unity of the Abia people, noting that despite different dialects and backgrounds, they remain bound by strong bonds of brotherhood, shared cultural identities, and a commitment to truth and fairness.
He described the Ohanze-Akirika Obu Road project as an economic lifeline, lamenting its abandonment for years due to negligence.
He assured residents that his administration is committed to expanding urban infrastructure, improving broadband access, and partnering with private investors to drive economic growth.
Otti encouraged residents to support development efforts by paying their taxes regularly, assuring them that the state had eliminated the old practice of using thugs for revenue collection.
“Our development agenda is beyond infrastructure; we are committed to building a new community of decent and patriotic individuals,” he stated.
Following this, the Governor proceeded to Umuikaa, where he flagged off the dualisation of the Owerrinta-Umuikaa Road at the Primary School Compound, Seventh Day Adventist Church, Umuikaa. This 5.5 km road serves as a key gateway into Abia State and will enhance trade and commerce while improving road safety.
The commissioner for works, Otumchere Oti, noted that its construction would last for 18 months and thanked the governor for going ahead with the construction.
Representing the contractors, the project director, I. Ac Allied Tech and Construction Co. Ltd., Engr. Dia Hourani noted that the contract symbolises hope and the governor’s dedication to his citizens.
He assured the government and people of Abia of high-quality work, promising that the project would be completed within schedule.
The Governor, in his speech titled A Gateway to the New Abia, emphasised that the road project would not only beautify the area but also reduce the risk of road accidents and attract investors to the state.
He assured residents that the construction would lay the foundation for the industrialisation of the region.
The Whistler reports that the events were attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, party stakeholders, and members of the benefiting communities, who expressed their appreciation to the governor for prioritising infrastructure development.
The ceremonies featured cultural displays, and residents took the opportunity to pray for Governor Otti ahead of his upcoming birthday on Tuesday.
They also praised his commitment to road construction, believing it would bring economic prosperity and improve their daily lives.
