The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been battling a respiratory infection for over a week, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday.

A follow-up Computed Tomography (CT) scan on Tuesday confirmed that he has bilateral pneumonia, which requires adjustments to his treatment.

Despite his condition, the Vatican said the Pope remains in “good spirits,” spending his time reading, resting, and praying. He also expressed gratitude for the support and prayers from well-wishes.

The Pope had been experiencing bronchitis symptoms for several days before his hospitalization, leading him to delegate others to deliver his prepared speeches at public events.

All his scheduled appearances through Sunday have now been cancelled, including key events for the upcoming 2025 Catholic Holy Year.

Doctors have modified his medication twice during his stay, initially to address what was believed to be a polymicrobial respiratory infection.

His lung issues date back to his early adulthood when he had part of one lung removed due to pleurisy.

Throughout his 12-year papacy, Pope Francis has faced multiple hospitalizations, including a three-night stay in March 2023 due to bronchitis.
