Protest: Police release record of incidences

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) on Saturday afternoon, August 3, said to combat the trend of crimes and criminality, it arrested 681 individuals who committed various criminal offences such as armed robbery, arson, mischief, and destruction of both public and private property.

The police said:

“Dangerous weapons, including two AK-47 rifles and assorted live ammunition, were recovered from the so-called protesters.”

The protest in Abuja has been affected after police shot at journalists and protesters in the nation’s capital.

It is not immediately clear if the protesters will recovenene.

Data from SBM Intelligence reveals that the ‘End Bad Governance’ protests took a violent turn on Thursday, August 1, resulting in 30 deaths.

DSS arrests hardship protest leaders

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Kabir Shehu Yandaki and Habibu Ruma, the leaders of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest in Katsina state.

The two leaders of the “Struggle for Good Governance” protest, were invited to the DSS office in Katsina and subsequently detained.

‘Call off protest’, Shehu Sani to anti-hardship demonstrators

Shehu Sani, a former senator who represented Kaduna Central in the national assembly, has called for the discontinuation of the ongoing protests against hardship in several Nigerian states.

Rights group, Amnesty International, said at least 13 people died during protests.

The non-governmental organisation (NGO) accused security forces of deliberately using tactics “designed to kill while dealing with gatherings of people protesting hunger and deep poverty.”

Subsequently, Sani waded in.

Protest in Nigeria: Military threatens to intervene

The Nigerian military has said it will intervene if violence recorded in some states in the ongoing nationwide protest tagged ‘End Bad Governance In Nigeria’ escalates.

As reported by The Punch on Saturday, August 3, the chief of defence staff, General Christopher Musa, during a press conference in Abuja, said the military would step in to control the looting and violence being witnessed in some parts of the country.

Obi reacts as ’17’ killed in Nigeria’s protests

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, on Friday night, August 2, lamented the killing of some ‘End Bad Governance’ protesters.

The Punch reported that no fewer than 17 persons were feared killed in Abuja, Kano, Niger, Borno, Kaduna and Jigawa during the #Endbadgovernance protest which was held across the country on Thursday, August 1.

Subsequently, millions of residents in northern Nigeria were placed under 24-hour curfews.

In a statement he personally signed, and shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi asked security agents to be professional.
