In a statement signed by leaders of the SMBLF, including Pa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark (Leader) , Sen. Azuta Nbata (Ohaneze President General), Ambassador (Dr.) Godknows Igali (PANDEF President General), Dr. Pogu Bitrus (President Middle Belt Forum) and Barr. John Nnia Nwodo (Coordinator), released to newsmen in Kaduna on Sunday, the forum described Chief Adebanjo’s life as a “beacon of integrity, justice, and unwavering commitment to democratic principles.”
The SMBLF praised Chief Adebanjo’s unwavering commitment to justice and democracy, saying he was a stalwart nationalist who dedicated his life to advancing Nigeria, advocating for equity, fairness, and good governance.
“His departure marks the end of an era, leaving a profound void in Nigeria’s political and socio-cultural landscape.
“Chief Adebanjo’s life was a testament to the power of resilience and principled leadership. He endured persecution, ) detentions, and threats but never wavered.
“Chief Adebanjo was a champion of justice and democracy. He was a strong advocate for the rights of marginalized communities and a vocal critic of oppressive regimes,” the statement said.
According to the Forum, one notable example of Chief Adebanjo’s commitment to justice and democracy was his support for the Southeast’s claim to the presidency in the 2023 elections, despite having a Yoruba candidate in the race.
“He championed fairness, arguing that the Igbo deserved a turn at the helm. His boldness in standing by this conviction, despite immense pressure, reaffirmed his legacy as a selfless leader who prioritized national unity over ethnic interests,” the SMBLF said.
The forum also acknowledged Chief Adebanjo’s profound impact on Nigeria’s political and socio-cultural landscape, describing his passing as a “monumental loss.”
“Throughout his life, Chief Adebanjo was not only a political activist but also a mentor and father figure to many. His wisdom and counsel were invaluable in the deliberations of the SMBLF, where he played a vital role in shaping the forum’s positions on national issues,” the statement said.
The SMBLF extended its heartfelt condolences to Chief Adebanjo’s immediate family, the Yoruba nation, and the entire country.
“We pray for the peaceful repose of his soul. May the Almighty grant his family, the Yoruba people, and Nigeria the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. His legacy will remain a guiding light for future generations,” the statement said.
The SMBLF also called on Nigerians to honor Chief Adebanjo’s memory by continuing his legacy of advocacy for justice, democracy, and national unity.
“Let us honor Chief Adebanjo’s memory by continuing his legacy of advocacy for justice, democracy, and national unity. Let us work together to build a Nigeria that is just, equitable, and prosperous for all,” the statement concluded.
