In a broadcast to the nation on Sunday, the President said he had heard their demands and expressed his administration’s willingness to resolve the grievances of the protesters.

“I have heard you loud and clear. I understand the pain and frustration that drive these protests, and I want to assure you that our government is committed to listening and addressing the concerns of our citizens.” He said.

The President defended his removal of petrol subsidies, which are at the heart of the protesters’ demands, insisting that “the removal was necessary if we are to reverse the decades of economic mismanagement that didn’t serve us well.”

Against the backdrop of the subsidy removal, Tinubu stated that total government earnings had more than doubled, surpassing N9.1 trillion in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, as a result of measures to prevent financial losses, implement automated processes, and raise funds innovatively without imposing extra financial burdens on citizens. He asserted that productivity in the non-oil sector was progressively rising to unprecedented levels and seizing the opportunities presented by the current economic environment.

“The economy is recovering; Please, don’t shut out its oxygen”.

Tinubu expressed his condolences to the families of Nigerians who lost their lives during confrontations with security forces and to those who suffered property losses due to looting.
