necessary for the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
The minister of works, David Umahi, said the compensation on Wednesday (today), May 1, 2024.
Umahi made this known during a stakeholders meeting held in Lagos state on Wednesday, The Punch reports.
The massive coastal project will span from channel 0 to channel 3.
It was gathered that more compensation is expected to be paid in the coming days.
Umahi had earlier said none of the infrastructure in the area will be affected by the demolition but only shanties.
He added that he has directed that the beach be shut down starting Sunday, April 28.
The Lagos-Calabar coastal road project is expected to take eight years to complete.
The 700 km Lagos-Calabar coastal road is designed to connect Lagos to Cross River, passing through Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states before culminating in Cross River.
Legit.ng recalls that Umahi said the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway construction would cost N4bn per kilometre.
He said it would take 15 years to recoup the money invested to construct the road, adding that the road would be completed in 8 years.
The minister disclosed that vehicles would be tolled on the road based on their sizes, from N1500 to N5000.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Umahi had also replied former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, stating that his claims are without facts and figures because he was speaking without knowledge of what was really transpiring.
The former Ebonyi state governor described Atiku’s analysis of the coastal projects as a gross misrepresentation of facts, and figures and a ploy to “mislead Nigerians by darkening counsel without knowledge.”
