The circular directed to the student and signed by Mr Victor Modebelu, the Acting Registrar of the School directed the student to return all school properties and vacate the school immediately.
The expulsion followed a recommendation by the University Senate after a committee was set up to investigate the issue of gross misconduct by the student.
It would be recalled that the management set up a transparent and unbiased investigative panel to look into the matter involving Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies and Goddy Mbakwe Precious a 3rd year student in the department of History and International Studies.
The recent trending video had shown the said student attacking the lecturer.
The incident, which gained considerable attention on social media, was taken very seriously by the University authorities.
The university management had earlier urged all concerned and members of the public to exercise restraint as it earnestly pursued the truth.
According to the management, the university is committed to upholding discipline and decorum, and will ensure that appropriate actions are taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
In an updated statement issued by Njelita Louis, acting Head of Information, Public Relations and Protocol of the School, the school authority said, “The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, wishes to update the public on the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings regarding the recent incident involving Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies.
“The actors involved were given a fair hearing by the Students Disciplinary Committee. After a thorough review by the Committee (SDC), the act committed by Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, a 300-level student in the Department of History and International Studies, was deemed a gross misconduct and a violation of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Students Disciplinary Regulations, particularly Regulation 4 (SDR).
“Based on the Committee’s findings and recommendations, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph 1. Ikechebelu, on behalf of the University Senate, has approved the immediate expulsion of Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. 3. She is required to vacate the University premises immediately and return all University property in her possession.”
The statement assured that, “The University Management, under the leadership of Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu, remains committed to maintaining the integrity of the institution by upholding discipline, ensuring a safe and conducive environment for learning, and fostering the development of scholars and leaders in character and excellence.”
