The suspect, Iliayasu Mohammed, 23, allegedly lured his friend, Safillahi Muhammad, to his house in Dantata Village, a suburb in the FCT, on February 13.
The suspect, reportedly an ex-convict who had just returned from the correctional service in December 2024, offered his friend a meal when he arrived.
“While the victim was eating, Mohammed attacked him with a cutlass, inflicting multiple wounds to the head and body,” a statement by the police, signed by its spokesperson, Josephine Adeh read on Wednesday.
The police were contacted at about 1 pm, and arrived at the scene to find the victim “unconscious in a pool of blood”.
The victim, the police said, was subsequently transported to a hospital, “where he was pronounced dead.
“During questioning, he confessed to the murder and disclosed his involvement in a criminal syndicate led by an individual named Hassan, who remains at large.”
Adeh told THE WHISTLER that the suspect confessed to having killed his friend to take away his motorcycle.
According to the police, Muhammed belonged to a gang known for targeting motorcyclists to steal their vehicles.
“The suspect is an ex-convict who confessed to killing his friend to steal his motorcycle. He confessed that since he came out of prison, he has had no motorcycle, so he invited his friend over for that reason.
“The suspect confessed to planning to resell it and then buy another one for himself to avoid any trace,” Adeh disclosed to THE WHISTLER.
The police statement revealed that the command is actively pursuing other members of the gang who have fled.
“Mohammed will face charges in court following the completion of the investigation.
“Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, urges residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
“The Command is dedicated to maintaining the safety and security of all residents,” the statement read.
