The structure collapsed suddenly in the middle of their lessons, reports the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
“The structure caved in without warning, sending debris crashing down on students who were in the midst of their lessons,” it said.
Teachers and fellow students however rushed to rescue those trapped under the rubble.
The Emergency responders evacuated the injured students to the Specialist Hospital Potiskum, where they are currently receiving medical care.
Among the casualties, was a one female student who lost her life after being struck by the collapsing veranda roof.
The Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Abba Adam, and the Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Science and Technical Education Board, Dr. Dauda Atiyaye, were said to have visited the scene and hospital to assess the situation and offer support.
While the exact cause of the collapse remains unknown, preliminary reports suggest that poor maintenance or structural weaknesses may have contributed to the tragedy.
“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident and are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause,” Adam stated.
The school is located about 100 kilometers from Damaturu, the state capital.
Government officials have assured the public that all necessary measures will be taken to guarantee the structural integrity of school buildings across the state.
