“I survived prostate cancer, and it is only because of my openness,” Charly Boy stated. “I am also trying to encourage Nigerian men to be more open about the challenges they face, especially concerning mental health and prostate issues. These problems are killing a lot of men.” His message highlights the need for men to openly talk about health challenges, which often go unspoken in Nigerian society.

Charly Boy’s advocacy extends beyond just physical health concerns. He has launched the Charly Boy Foundation to promote mental wellness and to break down the stigma that discourages men from expressing vulnerability. “We’ve been brainwashed to think that men don’t cry, but I cry if something touches my soul. I don’t care whether I’m in front of a million women, or if you think my crying makes me weak. I know I’m not weak, so I will cry. If something bothers me, I must get it out,” he shared, reinforcing the importance of emotional expression for mental health.

The foundation’s mission is closely linked to Charly Boy’s personal journey. Reflecting on his prostate cancer battle, he stressed the critical role of communication with trusted friends and family in overcoming health challenges. “My experience with prostate cancer inspired me to set it up,” he explained. “I would have been a goner if I had acted like others I know. That’s why I’m committed to raising awareness, showing men that openness is better than pretending to be strong.”

He further elaborated on the significance of early detection in preventing severe health complications. Charly Boy praised the Nigerian healthcare professionals who helped him during his treatment, explaining that he was treated by a doctor who was committed to Corporate Social Responsibility at Reddington Hospital. “The operation took place at Reddington Hospital,” he shared, emphasizing that quality care is available in Nigeria if men take the necessary steps to seek help.
