The clash was abandoned due to a heavy downpour, and both sides were awarded one point apiece.

This is the second time that a match involving Nigeria will be abandoned due to a rainfall, the group stage clash against Samoa was also called off as both sides got one point each.

The International Cricket Council confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday.

The statement reads: “The official word is in – The game has been abandoned.

“This outcome was expected, given the overnight rain and the persistent drizzle since the morning. With this outcome, both teams collect one point each to kickstart their Super Six campaign.”

Nigeria qualified for the Super 6 after finishing second in the group stage behind South Africa following an historic win over New Zealand.

The Junior Female Yellow Greens assistant coach, Blessing Etim is confident that the team has what it takes to excel in the Super Six .

She said: “Qualifying to the Super Six is not by luck, it is by hard work and hard work pays.

“We all know the standard of our players, they are capable, resilient, fighters, and strong and we believe so much in them, all they need is our support and encouragement.”

Meanwhile, The team has received a significant financial boost of $5,000 from the National Sports Commission (NSC) to encourage them in the Super 6 as they aim for history.

The announcement was made by the NSC’s Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, while addressing the team in Malaysia.

The Junior Yellow Greens, the first Nigerian side to compete at any level of a Cricket World Cup, have already stunned the cricket world with a remarkable victory over powerhouse New Zealand during the group stage.

While speaking to the players, Hon. Olopade expressed immense pride in their performance and reassured them of the nation’s unwavering support.

“I can’t stop thanking my elder brother, Uyi Akpata, the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, for all he is doing not just for this team but for cricket as a whole in Nigeria. The Federation has exemplified what true grassroots development should be, and your performance so far at this U19 World Cup proves it.”

He conveyed messages of encouragement from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko.

“President Tinubu sends his heartfelt message that the entire country is proud of you and is rooting for your success. Chairman Dikko has also asked me to assure you that we’re confident in your abilities—you’re sending England back to the king! If you beat England, there will be something special for you all.”

Olopade also made a personal contribution of $1,000 to team captain Lucky Piety, fulfilling her request for a laptop.

Nigeria will take on Ireland on Wednesday in their next match at the YSD UKM Oval, Bangi.
