Doyin Okupe, a former Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, has declared that he will no longer support Obi after a recent comment about the South-West region. The comment, made by Obi during a TV interview, sparked controversy. He discussed Nigeria’s current economic situation, mentioning high prices of rice and bread, and criticized political divisions.

Okupe, who had initially supported Obi, expressed his discontent, saying that Obi’s statement was an insult to the Yoruba people of the South-West. Okupe, who is Yoruba himself, felt betrayed by Obi’s words, especially given the support Obi had received from prominent Yoruba leaders during his presidential run.

He emphasized that his decision to support Obi was rooted in the belief that a southern president, particularly from the South-East, should emerge. However, after Obi’s remarks, Okupe stated that he could no longer back him.
