Eyewitnesses in the area have described the chaotic situation, with gunmen allegedly opening fire in different parts of the village. Although the identities and motives of the attackers remain unclear, residents have been forced to remain indoors for safety. Those who were in or near the polling areas during the time of the incident were also reportedly shaken by the sudden outbreak of violence.
A local source from Ofosun Village shared details of the attack, stating, “We’re not sure who is behind the gunfire, but shots have been heard throughout the village since early morning. They fired into the air in various locations.” The source also confirmed that there have been no reported casualties from the incident, though the fear caused by the gunshots has led to widespread confinement within homes. “Ofosun is located close to Benin in Edo State, and although no one has been harmed, everyone is staying indoors,” the source added.
In response to the violence, Festus Akingbaso, the Deputy Governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), condemned the attack, calling it a cowardly act aimed at intimidating voters and disrupting the electoral process. He further praised the resilience of the local population, commending the strong voter turnout in spite of the unsettling situation.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of voters in the region, with calls for increased vigilance and peace during the election period. Authorities are yet to comment on the attackers’ identity or whether any arrests have been made.
