Kovac succeeds Nuri Sahin at Dortmund after the former player was sacked on Jan. 22 with the team out of the German Cup still struggling in the Bundesliga.

The 53 years old Kovac, spent 19-month in charge of Bayern Munich between April 2018 and November 2019, he has been out of work since March 2024 after leaving Bundesliga side Wolfsburg
