Senator Oluremi Tinubu announced the endowment in response to the conferment of Fellowship Award on her at the 36th convocation of the 77-year-old Yaba College of Technology.
The First Lady, represented by Hon. Alawiye King, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Public Affairs and Strategy, Office of the First Lady, said the gesture formed part of her efforts to uplift young Nigerian girls for the greater good and development of the country.
Tinubu said she dedicated the Fellowship Award and the endowment to every young girl who cares to dream.
According to her the education of every Nigerian child is a collective responsibility, saying the important place of education explains her “Initiation of various charity programmes over the years including the New Era Foundation that gave birth to the Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition that produced the One-Day-Governor event; the Musical Youth Festival initiative that led to the Leadership Academy for Girls, the mentorship programme called Daughters of Salafi and the Renew Hope Initiative, which acts as a scope for education, economic empowerment, health, agriculture and social investment.”
Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, who also bagged the Fellowship Award of the institution, lauded the management of YABATECH for sustaining the standard.
Rt. Hon Abbas, who was represented by Hon. Kayode Laguda, the Chairman of the House Committee on Polytechnic Education, said he has made a representation for increased funding for polytechnic education given the important place of Technical and Vocational Education.
He added that a bill that will criminalise the dichotomy between University and Polytechnic education is also in the offing to check the discrimination against graduates of polytechnic education.
Prof Funso Afolabi, Chairman of the Governing Council, lauded the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ahmed Tinubu, for his unwavering support for technical education through the Renewed Hope Agenda, saying it reflected a forward-thinking approach that is critical for the continued development of the nation.
