Due to the amended electoral law, the Independent National Electoral Commission will expect all political parties to produce their candidates latest by June 2026. Therefore, all the serious-minded governorship Aspirants would commence realignment, alliance building and mobilization to secure party tickets by 2025.

So far, some prominent politicians have indicated interest in contesting for Kwara number seat during 2027 general elections. They include Prof Abubakar Sulaiman, Hon. Mashood Mustapha, Hon Yakubu Danladi, Arc Kale Kawu, Senator Sadiq Umar, Senator Saliu Mustapha and Prof Ali Ahmad. Although, the list is endless but these politicians have shown seriousness in pursuing their governorship ambition.

Professor Abubakar Sulaiman

Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju hails from Ilorin West Local Government in Kwara Central. He is an academic of repute with laurels to his profile. Prof Abubakar Sulaiman previously served as Minister of National Planning during President Goodluck Jonathan administration. He is currently serving second term as Director General National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies(NILDS), Abuja.

He recently aligned his political interest with All Progressives Congress after months of declaring apolitical stance. It would be recalled that former Senate President Bukola Saraki facilitated his appointment as Director General of NILDS in 2015 as the Peoples Democratic Party member.

Hon Mashood Mustapha

Hon Mashood Mustapha fondly called MM hails from Alanamu in Ilorin West Local Government. He is a successful businessman with focus on real estate and hospitality business. MM has previously served as Special Adviser and Commissioner in Kwara State. He also representative of Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constitency from 2011 to 2015. He was part of gladiators that led OTOGE revolution in 2019. Mustapha as of today belong to All Progressives Congress (APC) but he is having frost relationship with Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq. He aspired for governorship ticket of All Progressives Congress in 2018. Some Political Watchers opine that MM may decamp to another political party to actualise his governorship ambition. Hon Yakubu Danladi

Hon Yakubu Salihu Danladi is the Speaker Kwara State House of Assembly. He is the member representing Okuta/Gwannra State Constituency of Baruten local government in Kwara North. He worked at Federal University of Technology, Minna before resigning to contest for APC House of Assembly ticket in 2018. Danladi is having good relationship with Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq. He is seen as representative of youth assembly.

Arc Kale Kawu

Architect Boladale Kale Kawu is the Dan’ya of Ilorin Emirate. He hails Ilorin South local government. Kawu is the Executive Secretary of Rural Electrification Agency. He is yet to openly declare for any political party but the Ilorin born Technocrat has his eyes on Kwara governorship seat come 2027.

Senator Sadiq Umar

Senator Sadiq Umar is serving second term as representative of Kwara North Senatorial District in the National Assembly. Senator Umar, a professional pharmacist hails from Kaiama local government area. He enjoys large followership in his district.

Senator Saliu Mustapha

Senator Saliu Mustapha is the Turaki of Ilorin. Mallam Mustapha is representing Kwara Central Senatorial District on All Progressives Congress platform. He is the Chairman Senate Committee on Agriculture and rural development. Senator Saliu Mustapha once served as Deputy National Chairman of Congress for Progressives Change. He has wide political supporters beyond Kwara Central.  He aspired for Kwara Governorship seat in 2018 and APC National Chairmanship in 2021/2022.

Prof Ali Ahmad

Prof Ali Ahmad is a professor of law. He hails from Ilorin South local government in Kwara Central. He served as member representing Ilorin South/Ilorin East Federal Constitency in House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015. Prof Ahmad also served as Speaker Kwara State House of Assembly from 2015 to 2019. He is a member of Peoples Democratic Party. The University Don has been vocal in promoting his governorship ambition ahead of 2027 general elections.
