Labour, FG Convene To Finalise New Minimum Wage

This marks the fifth meeting since organised labour suspended their industrial action, which brought the country to a standstill, grounding business activities in Africa’s most populous nation.

The committee, comprising key stakeholders from the government, labour unions, and the private sector, aims to agree on a figure to present to the National Assembly for ratification.

The minimum wage negotiations have been ongoing for months, with labour unions demanding a significant increase in the current minimum wage of ₦30,000. The NLC and the TUC had embarked on an indefinite strike on Monday after negotiations with the Federal government ended on a deadlock. However, the strike was called off after the government agreed to a minimum wage above it’s recommended N60,000.

The tripartite meeting is coming 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu orderd Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to present to the government the cost implications of a new minimum wage.

In attendance of the ongoing meeting, which is expected to produce an agreed new national wage for the country, includes; Minister of Labour and Employment (State), Nkiruka Onyejeocha, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, Representative of the Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, Finance Minister, Wale Edun, Budget and National Planning Minister, Atiku Bagudu, among others.
