Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas said this in a statement made available to reporters after assessing the slow pace of response to the over 2 million people affected in Maiduguri city.
He said it has become a case of negligence on the part of the government to ensure that avoidable disasters such as this happens to the good people of the far northern region.
“The federal government must put in place measures to ensure that lives and property of Nigerians are safe at all times”, he said.
On the issue of rising water levels; resulting in the displacements of the entire Maiduguri city center and causing a Humanitarian disaster of unimaginable proportions, far reaching consequences will be apparent. On the hills of this, the president of the national youth, alliance, is making it distinctly clear that prompt mobilization from NEMA and other emergency agencies will save lives currently hanging on the balance.
In the meantime, the youth President has asked well-meaning Nigerians to render assistance to those displaced by the flood and for the government to investigate the situation with those found wanting punished.
In his words, “Explain to Nigerians why they have to go through such devastating avoidable event when the ministry of water resources saddled with the responsibility of providing adequate mitigatory measures against floods by damming water parts and channels is not up and doing”
Ambassador Aliyu has also asked for calm while the government moves to assist the victims.
