Oshiomhole, speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” emphasized that the current minimum wage of N30,000 is outdated and insufficient to meet the rising cost of living.
“All parties agree that N30,000 is a joke,” said Oshiomhole. “The purchasing power of workers at all levels has significantly declined, and wages need to be adjusted accordingly.”
Despite expectations of an announcement on Workers Day, the government has assured workers that the new minimum wage will be effective from May 1, 2024.
Minister of State Labour Nkeiruka Onyejeocha explained that consultations are ongoing to finalize the document.
Oshiomhole, a former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), commended the government for its assurance and urged workers to exercise patience.
The current Minimum Wage Act, signed in 2019, stipulates that the wage should be reviewed every five years to align with economic demands.
