Azubuike criticized the current Super Eagles squad, emphasising the need for increased effort and determination to salvage their World Cup qualification hopes.

Azubuike, a key player in the 2016 Rio Olympics Nigerian team, alongside stars like William Troost-Ekong and John Mikel Obi, did not mince words in his assessment of the national team’s struggles.

Nigeria is currently at risk of missing back-to-back World Cup tournaments following poor performances in their qualifying campaign.

A draw at home against South Africa and a surprising defeat to Benin have left Nigeria in fifth place in their group, with their chances of securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in jeopardy.

Azubuike believes the current Super Eagles players are not putting in the necessary effort. He stated, “We are one of the best teams in Africa, but right now, names don’t play football. I think we need to run more.” He criticized the team’s lack of effort and poor performance in recent games, urging them to run more as a team and play better football.

The 27-year-old midfielder, who plays for Çaykur Rizespor in the Turkish Super Lig, emphasised the importance of hard work and commitment. He stated, “If we can keep the ball more and run more than the opponent, then I believe we are going to scale through. Names do not play football anymore; there are no small teams, no underdogs. Hopefully, if we run better, we will make it out of the group and qualify for the World Cup.”

The Super Eagles must now find a way to revive their qualifying campaign in the remaining fixtures to avoid missing out on consecutive World Cup tournaments.
