Ambassador Al-Mustapha Bala Assudany, a Sudanese cleric has cautioned Nigerians, particularly youths, against embarking on protests over economic hardship, stating that nothing positive will come from it. With economic hardship and rising inflation causing distress, some Nigerians have scheduled a nationwide protest from August 1 to August 10. During a pre-huduba sermon at the Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna, the cleric warned the youths against allowing enemies of the country to use the protest to destabilize Nigeria. He shared his experience as a Sudanese citizen, recounting the events leading to the war in Sudan, emphasizing that the planned protests in Nigeria could result in similar chaos and destruction.
Assudany highlighted that enemies of Nigeria might be indirectly encouraging innocent youths to protest, mirroring tactics used in Sudan which ultimately led to civil war. He urged Nigerians to learn from Sudan’s experience to avoid bloodshed and maintain peace.
He cited examples of countries like Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Libya, and Sudan, which experienced severe destruction from initially peaceful protests. He described how 2 out of 3 percent of Sudan’s population had to flee their homes due to the ongoing war.
Assudany recounted the events in Sudan, where economic hardship prompted protests exploited by opposition groups and foreign interests, leading to a regime change but no lasting peace. He warned that similar outcomes could happen in Nigeria, a nation with even more significant challenges due to its tribal, religious, and ethnic diversity.
He concluded by praying for peace and harmony in Nigeria and urged the country’s leadership to take necessary actions to alleviate economic hardship.
