AZNews reports that Prince Kassim Afegbua, a member of the APC Transition Committee, made this allegation in a statement issued to the press on Sunday in Benin City.
Afegbua contended that the recruitment of these teachers by the outgoing governor was done in bad faith, suggesting it was an attempt to burden the incoming government.
He stated, “Throughout his tenure as Chief Executive of Edo State, Governor Obaseki failed to recruit any teachers to enhance the educational interests of the state. It is disheartening that he has suddenly recognized the need for teachers in the educational sector as his administration comes to an end.”
Afegbua urged the public, particularly those allegedly recruited as teachers, to disregard the recruitment exercise, calling it another political maneuver by Obaseki. He accused the governor of using the EdoBest initiative to defraud citizens, the World Bank, and other donor agencies.
“He used the project for personal gain and that of his cronies. If he truly cared for the state, he would have initiated this recruitment long before now, instead of waiting until his time in office was nearly over,” he said.
He further emphasized that this recruitment underscores the APC’s assertion that the EdoBest project was a sham and not intended for the benefit of the Edo people or its educational system. Afegbua claimed that the outgoing governor had prioritized his self-interest over the future of the state’s children.
He also recalled that Obaseki’s predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, had recruited 2,500 teachers at the end of his administration, a move Obaseki abruptly halted upon taking office in 2016, allegedly out of animosity toward those who supported his rise to power.
