The body was found in front of a new-generation bank between Ayama Junction and Olu-Obasanjo Road, prompting speculations that the man may have been murdered.
However, the Rivers State Police Command has clarified that the deceased was a notorious criminal who was lynched by a mob after being caught in the act.
Police officers responding to the scene identified the man as a suspect involved in multiple burglaries and related crimes. The command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, issued a statement on Saturday, refuting claims that parts of the man’s body were missing.
Iringe-Koko explained that after the mob left the body on the road, it was struck by a fast-moving vehicle, which caused further injuries.
“On 9 November 2024, at about 10:30 hrs, the Rivers State Police Command received a report of an unidentified body near Ayama Junction/Ikoku Spare Parts Market along Olu-Obasanjo Road, Port Harcourt,” the statement said.
“Preliminary findings suggest the individual was lynched by an angry mob at the scene while attempting to commit a crime. His remains were then left on the road, where a vehicle struck the body, causing significant damage. However, all vital organs were intact.”
The police have launched an investigation into the incident and are calling on the public to provide any useful information.
“We urge anyone with information regarding this incident to assist in our investigation,” the statement added. “The Rivers State Police Command is committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring that justice is served.”
