This comes after the Nigeria Police Force revealed the arrest of 130 suspects, including 113 foreign nationals and 17 Nigerian collaborators, for high-level cybercrimes and hacking.
Egbetokun confirmed that the police officers in question have been arrested and detained.
“The policemen have been arrested. We found out that the policemen were on illegal duty. Nobody deployed them,” he said in a Monday statement.
The IG emphasized that not everyone deserves police protection, but certain individuals, such as employers of labour and big businessmen, do require it.
“There are VIPs that the police have to protect… Some individuals have thousands of Nigerians in their organisations. Such individuals deserve protection,” he explained.
Regarding the arrested minors, Egbetokun clarified that they were not arrested for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests but for looting and destruction of public infrastructure.
“The police did not arrest anybody who participated in the #EndBadGovernance protest. We arrested criminals who took advantage of the protest to cause destruction,” he said.
Egbetokun also warned against the misuse of police escorts, stating that those who misuse their escorts will have them withdrawn.
“We will investigate and find out that they really deserve the escorts, and they are given the escorts. But when those individuals misuse their escorts, we immediately withdraw them,” he added.
