Protest: DSS confirm arrests

The Department of State Service (DSS) said it has arrested some of the sponsors of some tailors producing Russian flags.

The flags were prevalent in Kano during the ongoing protests.

Prophet El-Buba disagrees with Plateau govt on curfew

A cleric, Prophet El-Buba, has said there is no justification for the dusk-to-dawn curfew in Plateau state.

El-Buba, who joined the ‘End Bad Governance’ protest, argued that Plateau has been ‘adjudged as one of the most peaceful states’ during the current anti-hardship demonstrations.

Kaduna govt declares curfew amid raging protest

The Kaduna state security council has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Kaduna and Zaria metropolitan cities.

This is as a result of the protests in the cities, Daily Trust reported on Monday, August 5.

A nursing mother joined the protest on Monday, August 5.

In a one-minute video shared by The Cable, the woman demanded action on economic issues.

Pro protest lawyer says no to military rule

Amid the demonstrations against alleged anti-government policies, a human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has opposed calls in some quarters for the military to take over in Nigeria.

Effiong said in a terse post on his verified X page on Monday, August 5:

Protesters in Lagos on Monday, August 5, said they rejected the sum of N5,000 shared in their communities to end the ongoing protest in the state as the demonstration enters day 5.

According to Business Day, the protesters said this in Ojota, adding that they are not going back on their demands.

Lagos police react to reports it banned protest

Peaceful protests against economic hardship in Lagos are not banned, according to the state’s police command.

The Lagos state police public relations officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this on Monday morning, August 5.

Heavy police presence in Ojota

Premium Times reported the presence of several police operatives at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota, Lagos.

Posting on its X page at 9:06 am, the online news platform said there are no protesters in view though the demonstration was scheduled to start by 8:00 a.m.

It added that Adegoke Fayoade, the Lagos state commissioner of police (CP), is on ground with his men patrolling the park.

Protest in Nigeria: Plateau govt imposes curfew

Plateau state governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has announced a 24-hour curfew on Jos-Bukuru metropolis effective from midnight of Sunday, August 4th, 2024.

According to him, the action was taken in consultation with state security agencies after reviewing the actions of “unscrupulous individuals” who exploited the nationwide protest to unleash terror on innocent citizens within the affected areas.

Niger state has the highest casualty with six.

Amnesty International has accused Nigerian security forces of a clampdown on “peaceful hunger protesters”.

According to the non-governmental organisation (NGO), a mobile court has ‘hurriedly sent 109 protesters to prison’.
