The midfield star decided to end his career this summer after initially expressing interest in retiring in 2022 and then deciding to play on for another season.

What Did Kroos Say About His Retirement Decision?

“After 10 years, at the end of the season this chapter comes to an end,” Kroos posted on Instagram.

“I would particularly like to thank everyone that welcomed me with an open heart and trusted me. But especially I would like to thank you, dear Madridistas, for your affection and your love from the first day until the last one.

“At the same time this decision means that my career as an active footballer will end this summer after the European Championship.

“As I have always said: Real Madrid is and will be my last club. I am happy and proud, that in my mind I found the right timing for my decision and that I could choose it by my own.

“My ambition was always to finish my career at the peak of my performance level.”

Prior to the Euros in February, Kroos, who had previously retired from international duty in 2021, made an announcement about his return to Germany’s national football team.

This season, Real Madrid have already won La Liga, and on June 1 at Wembley, they will play Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final.

In September 2007, Kroos made his debut for Bayern Munich first team after playing at the youth level. He was a member of the 2013 Champions League-winning Bayern team before making the move to Madrid in the summer.
