Lookman won the award on the back of a strong showing for club and country in the year under review, starring for Nigeria at the AFCON before firing a hattrick in the Europa League final to help Atalanta to a 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
His choice an obvious one didn’t go down well with the host country of the award as he defeated their fellow country man Achraf Hakimi to the award, which was last won by Lookman’s international teammate Victor Osimhen.
The moment he was announced as the winner, boos rang out in the building from a section occupied by a delegation from Morocco. It continued outside the hall upon how exit and this time around some journalists joined in booing the Nigerian.
Chants of “Saariq” which means a thief in Arabic was hurled at the Nigerian while he posed for photographs with his friends, family members and well wishers. A disgusting behavior which will no doubt force CAF into a rethink on Morocco hosting the award again after two consecutive years.
